Ellen F. Kaufman, 92, a life-long seasonal resident of Paradox Lake, passed away on May 15, 2015, at her final home, The Arbors in Shelburne, Vermont, a loving community that provided her with comfort, dignity, enjoyment, and exceptional care during her final years. Ellen Kaufman was born in New York City, the first daughter of Walter and Natalie Fried and the granddaughter of prominent New York businessman, Samson Fried and Helen Lenk Fried. She grew up with Central Park as her playground and graduated from the Birch Wathen School and Centenary College in New Jersey. She married Edwin Kaufman in 1945 and enjoyed more than 50 years of a loving marriage; he predeceased her in 2003. They lived first in Astoria, Queens, then moved to Eastchester, New York, in Westchester County where they raised three sons and lived for 40 years before moving to Shelburne, VT in 1985 to be closer to family. Ellen was a home-maker, focusing on the schooling and activities of three active sons. She eventually worked in the newspaper business for a period before moving north to Shelburne. The family home on Paradox Lake, constructed in 1903 by Ellen’s grandfather Samson Fried, was the gathering place every summer season and where Ellen and Ed lived every spring, summer, and fall after his retirement in the ‘80’s. While suffering from severe dementia, we hope Ellen’s last thoughts were of her loving family and Birch Hill on Paradox Lake, her favorite place on Earth. Ellen was an outdoor enthusiast; her favorite activities were snow skiing with her family, a sport in which she participated until her mid-‘70’s, tennis, golf, and swimming in the pristine waters of Paradox Lake. She and Ed traveled extensively, often to ski in the American West and the Alps. She and Ed were among the original owners of Mount Snow Ski Resort in southern Vermont. Ellen Kaufman is survived by her immediate family: son David and wife Jane of South Burlington, VT and their three sons, Christopher and wife Marisa, Matthew, and Andrew; son Don of Shelburne, VT and his son Adam and his daughter Dana; and son Doug and wife Laura of Mount Snow, VT and Paradox Lake, NY. She is also survived by two sisters, Ginny Walters and husband Dick of Shelburne, VT; and Marion Kummel and husband Herb of Hanover, NH; and their families. Ellen will be memorialized with a plaque in the “Memory Gazebo” at Birch Hill and her ashes will be spread on family gardens, one of her favorite places to spend a summer day, as well as on Paradox Lake. Contributions in Ellen Kaufman’s memory may be made to Schroon Lake Fire and Rescue, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.

Schroon Lake; Jean L. Hall passed away peacefully in her home Sunday June 28, 2015, surrounded by family. Jean was born August 8, 1916 in Olmstedville, NY the daughter of the late John H. and Elizabeth Talbot Sullivan. Jean was predeceased by her husband Harrison, her infant daughter Ellen and daughter Virginia. Jean attended school in Olmstedville, graduated as salutatorian of her class. She entered Hunter College in New York City but returned home early to take care of family. She enjoyed rural life and has shared many early memories with her family. She met her husband, Harrison Hall of Newcomb and was married in 1940. She remained in Olmstedville with her parents while Harrison served as a Seabee in the South Pacific. Upon his return they settled in Schroon Lake to raise their family. Jean worked as a teacher’s aide in Schroon Lake Central School for many years and earned the respect and admiration of students and teachers alike. For years after her retirement former students would approach her or her children and relate how much they appreciated her kindness and help. She enjoyed serving as a “Brownie” leader after school and was very active in her church, Our Lady of Lourdes, especially when acting as a catechist instructing entering parishioners. She was a woman who lived her deep religious faith and taught her children by example, but she was not above giving out firm advice when one or another needed more than an example. After retirement Jean and Harrison moved to Florida, returning to Schroon Lake for months in the summer. Harrison’s illness brought them back to Schroon Lake until his death in 1993. Jean treasured the memories of her two trips to Ireland with several Sullivan family members and loved the many visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They in turn delighted when Jean would play the organ for them. In her 98th year her musical ability remained, but she sometimes complained that it was difficult to span an octave with “recalcitrant old fingers”. Jean is dearly missed by her surviving family, her son Michael, her daughters Anne, Mary and Elizabeth, her sister Betty and 19 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday July 3, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake, the Rev Kevin McEwan officiating. Interment will take place in the Federal Flats Cemetery in Olmstedville at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home.
